On super bowl Sunday, Ichabod, Garde Manger at New York’s Sons of Essex, decended up on a Tribeca kitchen to serve food not for restaurant consumption, but rather for the pure enjoyment of friends and family. This is his story.
“Scores of communities were sitting down to do the same thing, called together to confront a serious day of gluttony and alcohol consumption. This ritual marathon of excess, this unofficial holiday is, maybe, the most American of them all. We put up with the grocery store madness, the crowds, the long lines and growing receipts; necessary evils of preparation. The rundown is always the same. Someone gets all the liquor loaded and lugged to an agreed upon location. Another, usually and in most occasions me, procures, preps, and cooks the food. All, in one way or another, have the same intent. But it has always been about the community. You surround yourself with your cohorts and take comfort. You bond over your similarities, bask in your differences. You argue over old alliances while watching new ones form and futures are created. Control you level of comfort, control your world. For me that means ribs, wings, and whiskey in abundance. It means homemade bbq sauce and long, slow cooking time over low heat. It means rooftop views of city sunsets and wishes granted. It means, sometimes you forget the sporting event and revel in the moment of togetherness.”

This New York Town’s, a scary place, since day one seems to be
For troubled souls who’ve lost their grip on all reality,
In all my years I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly
And yes for better, or for worse, this town is home to me;
The Downtown scene, will make you say “It’s only Tuesday Night?”
The Midtown rat race rushes by, the weak won’t stand the fight,
5th Avenue, the tourists love, on line since morning light
And Central Park, with whom you love will make your time just right;
East Village cool, the Chelsea boys, and sexy Soho dames
The West Village, around the world, I’m sure they know the name,
Upper East Side, the rich they thrive, in Harlem they maintain
No matter class, or social rank, your neighborhood’s the same;
Manhattan, you’re my home, my heart, my love resides in you
You gave me all the things I love, encouraged me to do,
The best I can with what I have, the rest I leave to you,
On 16th street, born years ago, my life I know is true.

Day 1
Blurb – Friday January 20th.
The first day of my Sundance began amidst majestic waves of snow rolling through Park City, which is all well and beautiful if you’re not hauling 3 bags of DJ equipment down a steep icy hill in skinny jeans. My main mission this Sundance is coordinating the Brandsway DJ series at the Talent Resources Suites in Gateway Center, for the past four years we’ve originated and maintained a program of having some of the best DJ talent spin in the daytime while celebrities and media grab their giant bags of free swag. This year is no different, my task is scheduling, setting up for and filling in the downtimes while our talent does their thing. The first day was a blur of booth setup, meeting the dozen sets of brand reps I’d be sharing a space with for the next three days, and then the inevitable crush of celebrities that came in the afternoon. Major plus sides included having the dj booth next to the Cream of Wheat display (who doesn’t love Cream of Wheat?) and the notorious open bar. Anthony Pisano, a big resident DJ in Miami (Liv, Louie and many more), and a member of the dance music group Brass Knuckles soundcloud.com/brass-knuckles-1/brass-knuckles-lie-to-you was our guest this afternoon, and he played open format jams while Chris Kattan told jokes for the cameras, football players came to the dj booth to take photos and we dealt with the barrage of text messages from everyone outside who couldn’t get in. Friday night was my night off from spinning so I let myself be talked by some locals into going somewhere where they were playing dubstep. At 1am we heard the rumor Blake Lively was making out with Karl Rove in an alley by Harry O’s (it seemed less surreal at the time) and so we booked it over there with the paparazzo’s to try and be a part of tabloid history but the end result was pretty anti-climactic. So ended day 1.
Blurb 2.
Saturday I awoke to an actual full on blizzard, which made me extremely thankful the rental car company left an ice scraper in the car (shoutout to Avis). Made it down to Main Street alive, but some of other dj’s didn’t quite have the same luck, and we’re caught in the snow outside of town. So I filled in sets while Aziz Ansari, Mario Lopez and a host of others cruised around the suite, and enjoyed an ahi & guacamole breakfast compliments of Beau Marchais. Mick Boogie came in at 230pm and spun classic hip hop, soul and funk to much applause, making my day by playing Nas’ “Live at the Barbeque”. Afterwards I spun a cocktail party for Voli vodka, where the crew from Remix watches came thru in full force and hung out till 9:30. All the staff from the TR Suites hit dinner after at Silver on Main Street, where a goose leg and a glass of whiskey brought me back to the life. I had been prepared to go to Tao to see Kaskade, but got a text that the DJ booked to spin at our daytime space for the late night party was having technical difficulties, so I ended up swinging back to DJ the party. All the nighttime programming had been top secret, I had no idea what the party was but upon arrival was informed it was a private party for LCD Soundsystem’s family and friends surrounding films they were working on for Sundance so I got to play all the Holy Ghost, The Smiths, Bag Raiders etc that my heart desired. At the end of the night I came to the parking lot to find the rental car buried in snow, and got lucky that a group of drunken bro’s helped me push it out. Next time a bro requests Vertical Horizon or something of the like, I’m planning to consider playing it.
Day 3
Sunday is when things fully got into motion at the TR Suites, the DJ lineup included San Francisco’s Daisy O’Dell, Los Angeles’ Mr. Best and NYers Terry Urban & Julian Cavin and myself. They set out keeping everyone energized while Lil Jon, assorted real housewives, Omar from The Wire, the white kid from breaking bad who wore the Steve Aoki t-shirt on that one episode, and various other stars tore through the suites. With a full set of DJs I finally had a chance to run around town, stopping by Gen Art and the Entertainment Tonight suites, catching an HBO Panel filming at Blue Iguana, and being apprehended by security trying to sneak into films. In the evening I had to do promotion for my Sundance mix release, sending out email blasts after if was posted on Fresh New Tracks http://freshnewtracks.com/2012/01/22/silver-medallion-slave-night-sundance-edition-dj-mix/. Then it was time to check out Deadmau5 performing at HarryO’s and the 4am DJ roster going late into the night at Tao to take full advantage of the final night. Woke up Monday am still in my boots, now its time to start packing equipment for a flight back to New York.
